What are the Rituals Punjabis Follow Before and After the Marriage?

Punjabi weddings are vibrant and joyous celebrations filled with numerous rituals that have deep cultural significance. These Punjabi marriage rituals are observed both before and after the wedding ceremony. Here is an overview of some of the key pre and post wedding rituals followed by Punjabis:

Before the Wedding:

Roka: The first formal step towards the wedding is the Roka ceremony, where the families of the bride and groom exchange gifts and blessings. It symbolises the acceptance of the alliance.

Sagai/Engagement: The engagement ceremony involves the exchange of rings between the bride and groom as a public announcement of their commitment to marry.

Sangeet: The Sangeet ceremony is a fun filled event where family and friends come together to sing and dance in celebration of the upcoming wedding. It is characterized by music, dance performances, and lots of laughter.

Mehndi: The Mehndi ceremony is a women centric event where intricate henna designs are applied to the hands and feet of the bride. Family members and friends also participate in this ritual.

Chooda Ceremony: On the morning of the wedding day, the maternal uncle of the bride gives her a set of red and white bangles (chooda), which she wears throughout the wedding festivities for good luck.

Ghara Gharoli: Before the wedding, the female relatives of the bride visit a nearby temple to fill a pitcher (gharoli) with holy water. The bride then takes a ceremonial bath with this water.

The Wedding Ceremony:

Baraat: The groom arrives at the wedding venue with his family and friends in a grand procession called the Baraat. They are welcomed by the bride’s family, and the groom is typically seated on a decorated horse.

Milni: During the Baraat, the two families meet, and the elders exchange garlands and embrace each other as a symbol of their acceptance and love.

Anand Karaj (Sikh Wedding) / Varmala (Hindu Wedding): In a Sikh wedding, the couple participates in the Anand Karaj, the Sikh marriage ceremony conducted in a Gurdwara. In Hindu weddings, the bride and groom exchange floral garlands (varmala) as a sign of acceptance.

Laavan Pheras (Sikh Wedding): In the Anand Karaj, the couple takes four pheras (circumambulations) around the Guru Granth Sahib, representing the four stages of love and unity in married life.

After the Wedding:

Doli: The Doli ceremony marks the bride’s departure from her parental home to her husband’s house. It is an emotional moment for her family as they bid her farewell with blessings and tearful goodbyes.

Griha Pravesh: Once the bride arrives at her new home, she is welcomed by her in-laws, and there are various customs to bless her new journey as a member of their family.

Reception: After the wedding, a reception is often held where friends and extended family members come together to congratulate and bless the newlywed couple.
